My trainingcourse in York in december 2007 was a good experience. I visited  North Yorkshire Police and one of the local Newpapers. I did my training at the SLS (Special language service).

York is one of Englands oldest towns surronded by a city wall.

A pick of pictures

The Minster is Yorks heart - you can see it from almost every part of te city.

Skolan låg i en buisness park utanför York.

The Shambles var en av de äldsta gatorna, trångt men mysigt.

At the pub-quiz we won four pints of beer.

The Engelish pub´s look´s like expected. In York there is 370 pub´s - one for each day. The city has 150000 citizens.

A classroom were the old and the new meets.

The trip

2007-10-01

Took my car to my sister in Helsingborg to have dinner and park the car. My brother i law should have been home from Chile but were stuck there because the plane was broken.

After dinner I took the train to Copenhagen and Kastrup airport

2007-12-02

The flight from Kastrup to Manchester lifted at eigt in the morning. Thou SAS did not fly with there Dashplane we had to fly an old DC 9 from Spanair. In England the weather was so bad that we could hardly land.

Two hours train from Manchester to York. In York I took a walk in the rain to take a first look at the city. I also had a ham sandwich. Later John, my host, picked me up. My training started immediately with a four-hour conversation. It was a really nice family.

First day at school. Schoolmates were Thomas, Thomas and Barbara from Germany and Andrej from Russia. We met quite a lot between lessons and in the evenings. The education was well structured an we got started immediately.

Niki was my personal instructor. We planned the day to be as alike an ordinary day at work as possible with the different that I did not say a word in Swedish. By following what happened at home on Internet I got enough knowledge to give information in English. Niki and the other instructors were reporters and I gave interviews booth on telephone an in front of a camera.

A visit at the North Yorkshire Police department Headquarters in Northallerton some miles north of York. I was well taken care of and their head of information Hannah Davies showed me around. After a day of conversation we found out that we had a lot of similar problems. The communication issues were similar and had reached as far as we. It was a very interesting share of experience.

I forgot the camera!

I met Francine from the newspaper The Press in York. We established the fact that the ethical values at English media was in a wider span than in Sweden.  Francine reprecented a local newspaper and thir values were much like our Swedish. The relation between the newspaper an the Police was very  good. They had a meeting every day and they also had a telephoneservice through an answering-machine.

In England they have what they call Media Blackouts. It means that the chief of police can make a request to media not to publish if someone’s life is at stake. Through this media can be informed all along to be ready to publish when life no longer is at stake. Very interesting!

In the evening we visited the pub to join a pub-quiz together with my host-family. The mixed knowledge made that we won four pints of beer.

2007-12-07

Last day. I spent the evening listening to a Christmas-concert at St. Peters School, England’s oldest. The school was a "Public School" that means "Private school". Fees at about 20000 pound a year. Some family’s had three kids that spent ten years each at the school. It was a very nice concert, especially the choirs. I was most amazed by the barbershop choir singing Bondmusic

Time to go home. The weather is still terrible. Some X-mas shopping at the airport. I bought a digital camera to a price 1000 SEK less than in Sweden.

I landed at Kastrup airport in time. On the ferry to Helsingborg I took the opportunity to by some real Julebryg.

Thank´s for an amazing week - John and Ann and don´t forget your son James.
